Johannesburg - A man accused of killing two children and seriously injuring his ex-girlfriend appeared in the Zeerust Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Michael Mqathula, 35, charged with arson, two counts of murder, and assault GBH, would appear in court again on January 6, the court clerk said.

He was arrested after the crime in Maruping village, Ottoshoop, North West around 4am on Wednesday.

Two children, a two-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, died when he set fire to their shack, Captain Pelonomi Makau said on Friday.

The man was the father of one of the children. The ex-girlfriend was the other child's aunt.

“It is alleged that after burning the shack, the suspect stabbed his ex-girlfriend with a knife several times... and she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.”

Makau said the motive for the attack was still unknown and investigations were continuing. - Sapa
