Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the arrests were made in the Dobsonville, Jabulani, Naledi, Protea Glen, Lenasia and Lenasia South areas.

“The charges ranged from dagga possession, possession of stolen property, rape, illegal possession of firearms and common robbery,” said Makhubela.

Four people were also arrested for illegally operating shebeens.

“We have shut down their businesses and seized their alcohol.”

Around 200 of those arrested faced minor charges such as gambling and public drinking.

All those arrested would appear in the Protea and Lenasia Magistrate's Courts from Monday.

The mass arrests come amid the 'When Duty Calls: Festive Operation' that Soweto police launched four weeks ago.

The project includes erecting road blocks, stop-and-search operations as well as raids.

“We have arrested around 1000 people since the start of the project,” said Makhubela.

The operation would run until January. - Sapa
