Eastern Cape - Eastern Cape police are still looking for the owners of paintings found in Port Elizabeth four months ago, a spokesman said on Friday.

“Any person who can identify the paintings or prove ownership thereof is advised to contact their nearest police station,” spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said.

The six paintings, the value of which was not yet known, were found at a house in New Brighton in July after police received a tip-off about stolen property on the premises. No one had come forward to claim them or lay charges.

Mzwandile Lebora, 37, was arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property. He was due to appear in the New Brighton Magistrates' Court again on November 22.

“The identification of the paintings would help us track down their owners. The paintings might have been part of a house break-in or could even come from outside Port Elizabeth, hence this appeal to the public.”

On Tuesday, four of five paintings stolen from the Pretoria Art Museum were found on a bench in a cemetery in Port Elizabeth. The paintings are worth about R17.5 million. - Sapa
