Cape Town - A man and woman have appeared in the Strand Magistrate's Court for possession of crayfish, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the two, aged 50 and 53, appeared on Wednesday and would remain in custody until their bail application on Monday.

They were arrested on Monday afternoon while driving on the N2 highway.

Over 4400 crayfish tails were found packed in the boot of their car.

“It was later established that the female was previously arrested, also for possession of crayfish tails on January 12, 2012, near Lwandle,” Van Wyk said.

The total value of the tails was R500 000.

By law, a seasonal permit is required to catch a maximum of four crayfish a day.

There is also a limit on the number of crayfish that can be transported in a vehicle. - Sapa
