Durban - Two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and other offences by the Durban High Court, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Delani Njongo, 33, and Bapho Scelo Ngubane, 36, who were also charged with kidnapping and attempted murder, were sentenced on Thursday, Colonel Jay Naicker said in a statement.

“The first accused was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment as well as 25 years. The second accused was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment,” he said.

Naicker said on August 31, last year, two victims were at C section in Umlazi when they were approached by the accused at a gunpoint.

“They forced them into a motor vehicle and drove off to a school soccer field in the area. One of the victims managed to escape and whilst fleeing he heard a gunshot go off. He hid for a while before returning to the soccer field where he found his injured friend who died at the scene,” he said.

Naicker said a case of murder was opened at Umlazi Police Station and both the accused were arrested in September, 2014.

They were denied bail and remained in custody until sentencing, he said.
