A man accused of strangling a woman before burning her body has appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said 26-year-old Faisal Mohamaed, a Pakistani national, would remain in police custody after appearing in court on Tuesday.

“The matter was postponed to Thursday for the court to give its judgment on Mohamaed's bail application.”

He was arrested earlier this month after police found his 20-year-old girlfriend Tlaela Leratho's body on the side of the R101. A police patrol noticed a small fire and stopped to investigate, finding Leratho's body.

She was strangled before her corpse were set alight. Both her legs had been broken.

Leratho's murder sparked a number of xenophobic attacks last week as residents of the Phagameng township attacked Pakistanis and Ethiopians and looted their shops. About 30 families sought refuge at the local police station while others fled the area. A total of 104 people were arrested during the attacks. – Sapa
