Durban - The man who was allegedly caught pinching an African grey parrot from a pet shop is expected in court at the end of the month.

The baby bird was stolen from Julie’s Tropical Fish Centre at Gateway shopping centre. Within the week, CCTV footage of the incident was released on social media sites and the alleged culprit was confronted at his home in Verulam.

Debishand Prakash will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on February 29.

He is on bail of R1 000 and is yet to plead.

A video clip taken from CCTV camera footage allegedly shows him hiding the bird under the jacket of a boy who was with him.

The parrot was stolen from a ventilated box, which contained sawdust for warmth because the bird’s feathers had yet to grow. It was being hand-reared and was too young to perch in a cage.

Mehmood Deedat, spokesman for the pet shop, said the bird would be named Evidence.

They also have to decide whether to keep it or put it up for sale.
