Johannesburg - A brawl outside a petrol station in Linden that left one man with a serious stab wound was stopped thanks to the help of an armed passer-by.

According to Joburg East's police spokesman Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, an argument between three men near the Engen garage on 4th Avenue, at around 9pm on Monday, quickly turned violent.

Two of the men began beating the third, and one of the pair took out a knife, stabbing his victim just as a resident in the area drove by.

The resident witnessed the stabbing and used his gun to fire a warning shot and stop the violence.

Police officers arrived a short while later to arrest the two men at the scene, while the stabbed man was stabilised and rushed to hospital.

Zondo said investigators were still trying to determine the reason for the fight, but confirmed that the three men knew each other and robbery had been ruled out as a motive.

Two of the men were expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning to face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

According to Zondo, the man wounded in the attack was stable on Tuesday.
