Pensioner guilty of dagga dealing

Butterworth - A 71-year-old woman pleaded guilty to dealing in dagga in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

Nomacingo Makeleni was sentenced to a R1500 fine or three months imprisonment, suspended for three years, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

She was arrested at Zazulwana village, Butterworth, on Sunday for growing dagga plants in her garden.

“The elderly suspect was arrested as her garden was full of dagga instead of maize,” Manatha said at the time.

The police uprooted the plants, which had a combined weight of 68kg, and a street value of about R20 000. - Sapa
