Cape Town - Gugulethu residents are baying for blood after an 82-year-old woman was murdered in her home, allegedly for her pension money. Evelyn Tofu’s body was discovered on Wednesday evening. Her throat had been slit.

“She was killed on the day she received her pension. Her wallet was lying empty next to her body. For what was she killed? A few rand?” asked Yandiswa Zibi, a neighbour.

Zibi said Tofu was a sangoma and a prominent Uniting Presbyterian Church member – that gave her considerable standing in the community.

Tofu’s neighbours became concerned as they had not seen her since Monday evening.

Neighbour Thami Zantsi called one of Tofu’s relatives. When they forced open the back door, they found the body on her bed. A case of murder has been opened.
