Durabn - A Durban man, who watched in horror as robbers fired at a cash guard in a fast food outlet, has told how he discovered his mother and aunt bleeding from bullet wounds.

They had been waiting for him in the car outside.

Perumal Soobramoney, 35, said the family had been on their way to the beach when they stopped at the KFC on Inanda Road in Newlands West on Sunday.

He walked into the takeaway, leaving his mother, Amaravathy Pillay, 74, his aunt, Pushpa Pather, 76, and the neighbour’s 13-year-old in the back seat of his Toyota Corolla. His father Munian Pillay, 66, was in the front seat.

“While I was waiting in line, a security guard came out from a door behind the counter with cash boxes.

“Two men eating at the table got up and fired two shots. I am not sure where the bullets went.

“Their guns jammed as they tried to shoot again.

“They were wrestling with the guard. People saw this as an opportunity to run into the dining area to hide under the tables. It happened so fast. We were trembling.

“We heard more gunshots,” said Soobramoney. “Once calm descended I ran out the store and saw my car had bullet holes in the window.”

Soobramoney saw his father crouched in his seat.

“My mother and aunt were crying in pain. They had blood on them.

“The front window had bullet holes and the back windscreen was shattered. The bullet struck my aunt in her face and my mother in her shoulder,” he said.

“My aunt was taken to hospital. She was released on Monday.

“My mother was treated and discharged. The bullet went through my mother’s shoulder. They are both in pain,” Soobramoney said.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said a cash-in-transit security company had been delivering cash to a restaurant on Inanda Road when five men with guns approached them.

“The men robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash inside two money boxes. A guard’s firearm was also taken,” he said.

Newlands East police station is investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

No arrests have been made yet.

Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, said a security guard and two bystanders suffered bullet wounds while two other bystanders were traumatised.
