Durban - A teenage petrol attendant has been arrested for possession of a machine he had allegedly been using to clone bank cards.
The 18-year-old Clare Estate resident was working at a petrol station in the suburb when police arrested him.
Police sources said he allegedly used a modified machine, which looked like a normal card swipe machine and would swipe the card and ask the customer to key in the PIN.
The machine would then read “communication error”.
He would then tell the customer the machine was faulty and fetch a working one.
He would swop the machine and return to complete the transaction. Police sources said the teenager had cloned the details of 18 cards in one week.
A man involved in the alleged scam would fetch the machine from him.
Sydenham police spokesman Captain Myen Lazarus said the Commercial Crime Unit was investigating the possibility of a syndicate being involved.
The teenager was charged with being in possession of stolen property.
