Petrol bombing spooks Durban family

Durban - A family fear for their safety after their car was petrol bombed while they slept at their south Durban home.

A piece of underwear stuffed inside a plastic bottle containing petrol, was thrown at the car on Wednesday morning.

The Toyota Corolla had been parked under a carport in the driveway of the Moodleys’ home in Lotus Park, Isipingo.

Julie Moodley said she heard a noise outside her bedroom window and on looking out, she saw smoke. She woke up her husband, Mel, and they ran outside to find the boot of the car on fire.

“I must have run about six times with a bucket of water, to and from a wash basin. I kept throwing water on to the flames from a distance. There was a lot of smoke,” Mel Moodley said.

“A neighbour screamed to connect the garden hose. Within 10 minutes, we doused the flames.”

The boot of the car was burnt, including part of the boot spoiler, wiring and number plate. Moodley said he found the melted remains a plastic bottle and a red cloth, believed to be a strap from underwear, on top of the boot.

“We later checked a CCTV camera from a house nearby. It showed a man walking on the road towards my driveway gate.

“He stopped, lit something and threw it on to the car,” Moodley said.

The couple have two daughters. who have been traumatised by the incident. The family fear for their safety and have asked police to find the culprits.

“It’s nasty for people to do something like this. What if my house caught alight or the car exploded?

“I had this car for 11 years. We work hard for our property,” Moodley said.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said Isipingo police were investigating a case of malicious damage to property.

No arrests had been made.
