Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar reportedly denied a charge of assault after appearing in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder told The Sowetan newspaper he had not attacked Thabang Mnisi, the son of Public Service and Administration Deputy Minister Ayanda Dlodlo.

“I did not assault the complainant,” Pienaar, speaking through his lawyer Cliff Alexander, was quoted as saying.

“I admit I was present at the club that night, but I did not assault anyone.”

According to the newspaper, Pienaar and his acquaintances were accused of kicking and punching Mnisi at a nightclub in Sandton, Johannesburg, last month.

The case was postponed to September 6 and Pienaar was released on a warning. – Sapa
