Durban - Astrid Tavira, who was jailed for conspiring to kill her mother, has decided not to apply for leave to appeal against her conviction and sentence in the Durban Regional Court.

Tavira, 20, was found guilty in September of plotting the murder of her mother, Freda, 50, who was raped and strangled in August last year.

Tavira’s boyfriend, Waleed Karriem, 34, pleaded guilty to raping and murdering his aunt.

He is serving a life term.

Magistrate Nanette Otto gave Tavira a sentence of 15 years in jail, with seven years wholly suspended.

On Wednesday, Tavira said no when asked if she wanted to proceed with her application. Her lawyer Twanette Volskenk, said Tavira had changed her mind, but gave no reasons why.

The case was struck off the roll. -The Mercury
