The confessions of two police reservists have come under question, after intimidation allegations surface.
The case against three men charged with the ambush-style murders of two Western Cape police officers was postponed by the Khayelitsha Regional Court on Monday, February 06, 2012 so they could get legal aid.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said the men, Sivuyile Sangovana, Khangelani Twala and Olwethu Sotondoshe, would appear again on February 21.
“A family of one the late officers was in court today and the proceedings were explained to them and the process that is likely to follow on 21 February,” Ntabazalila said.
The three men allegedly shot dead Warrant Officer Gershwin Matthee and student Constable Cannon Cloete on May 22, when they arrived in the Wallacedene squatter settlement near Kraaifontein to attend to a rape complaint.
Both officers were robbed of their service pistols.
Sangovana and Twala were arrested while receiving treatment for bullet wounds Ä Sangovana in Groote Schuur Hospital and Twala in Tygerberg Hospital.
Sotondoshe was found in Pollsmoor Prison, where he was in custody for an unrelated matter.
The three men launched a combined bail application, but abandoned it before it started. They are in custody in Pollsmoor Prison.
Prosecutor Blaine Lazarus told the court at a previous hearing that, because the murders were premeditated and involved police officials, the three faced life sentences. - Sapa
