A suspect has been arrested in connection with three murders committed in Delft at the weekend.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said a 31-year-old man from Voorbrug in Delft was arrested by investigators on Sunday.

“He will appear in court once charged. As you know, it’s the long weekend, so he might appear on Wednesday,” Van Wyk said.

The Weekend Argus reported on Sunday that an 11-year-old boy and his older brother, out for a walk early on Saturday, stumbled upon the bullet-riddled bodies of two men in an open field in Voorbrug.

“There was lots of blood and foam coming out of the one man’s mouth,” said the older boy.

“I was shocked to see the bodies just lying there. The other one was lying further away.

“We turned back and ran home.”

Another body was found just a few hundred metres away by passers-by.

Two of the bodies are thought to be of brothers aged 28 and 21, while the third was named as Clinton Botha, 17. All three had multiple gunshot wounds to their heads and backs.

Residents told the Weekend Argus they heard a volley of gunshots late on Friday night, but nobody ventured outside or called the police.

“There were several gunshots, one after the other,” one resident said.

Another believed that a fourth victim, found near the footbridge on the other side of the R300 in the Wesbank area, was taken to hospital. Police could not confirm this.

People speculated that the victims were attacked and tried to flee before being gunned down.

Van Wyk said the three men all came from Theescombe Street in the Wesbank area.

He said the motive for the killings was unknown, but the possibility that they might have been drug or gang related would be investigated.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Paul Cilliers at 021 954 9062. - Cape Argus
