Tzaneen -

A man has been arrested for raping a two-year-old girl and leaving her for dead in bushes near Pulaneng village, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

“The suspect was arrested yesterday (Saturday) in a raid at a flat in Yeoville, Johannesburg,” said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“He did not resist arrest and is currently being transported back to Limpopo to face the rape charge,” he said.

The police launched a manhunt for the 29-year-old man after the child was abducted and raped two weeks ago.

“The toddler is currently recuperating at home after spending a week at the Mankweng hospital,” said Mulaudzi.

He said the man was expected to appear soon in the Maake Magistrate's Court on a charge of rape.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe urged people living in the area to behave themselves and let the law take its course when the man appeared in court.

“I can understand the anger that incidents like these can cause in the community, but I strongly warn people from taking the law into their own hands and seek(ing) some form of retribution,” he said. - Sapa
