Pietermaritzburg - Staff from Natal Wholesale Jewellers at the Hayfields Mall in Pietermaritzburg were in shock after being held at gunpoint on Thursday.

The owner of the franchise, Sandy Naicker, did not want to comment on the incident.

A staff member was seen outside the shop shaking and in tears.

She, too, did not want to say anything.

Two of the four suspects were arrested by police and the jewellery they had stolen was found.

Car guard Daphne Lloyd said she was directing a driver out of a parking space when two men came running out of the shopping centre. One ran towards a car and the other in a different direction.

“I heard shooting, but don’t know who was shooting,” she said, holding in her hand three bullets wrapped in a tissue.

The shop is situated directly opposite Pick n Pay.

A police source said three of the gang went into the centre, while the driver stayed in the car.

The men’s vehicle was found abandoned in Mkondeni. It was riddled with bullet holes.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the two men arrested were aged 22 and 27 and would appear in court soon.
