Cape Town - A Cape Town police captain appeared in court on Thursday for allegedly lying about a burglary at his house in which a firearm and ammunition was stolen, Western Cape police reported.

“It is believed that a burglary was reported at the residence of the captain on Tuesday, May 5 2015 in Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha” said Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk.

“(The report stated) that a 9mm parabellum pistol and ammunition was stolen. A burglary case was registered.”

The captain in question was a 46-year-old from the Lingelethu-West SAPS and during the investigation of the case, police discovered that there had been no burglary and a case of perjury was registered.

The captain appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on a count of perjury on Thursday and investigations into the matter would continue.
