Durban - It was not an action stunt from a movie when an unmarked Nissan X-Trail police vehicle veered off the pier on Maydon Wharf on Sunday.

A police detective based at the Maydon Wharf police station is recovering from shock after he drove off the pier by accident.

Maydon Wharf police spokesman, Brigadier Anthony Gopaul, said circumstances around the incident were being investigated.

“The police officer was alone. While he was driving, he had allegedly misjudged the road when it took a sudden bend. The car plunged off the berth into the sea.

“He managed to free himself and swam to safety. This area is used by fishing trawlers and cargo ships. We spoke to him this morning. He is in shock in terms of his experience. He will undergo counselling,” Gopaul said.

The vehicle was later recovered.
