Pretoria - Police believe a serial rapist has been preying on women as young as 16, in and around Akasia and Soshanguve, for the past 19 months.
They have now appealed to the public to help them find a 32-year-old man they believe can assist in the investigation into nine reported rape cases linked to the serial rapist who escaped from police custody two months ago.
With the help of the rape victims, an identikit was compiled and police found links between the cases.
One of the alleged rape victims, Angela, spoke to the Pretoria News on Tuesday, still traumatised from her ordeal less than a week ago.
Angela was returning home from an outing with her boyfriend in Soshanguve extension 1 at about 10.30pm last week Thursday, when they were accosted by two men.
“One of them had a gun and pressed it against my boyfriend’s chest. They told him to lie down on the floor but he refused, so they started assaulting him until he lost consciousness,” Angela said.
While watching her boyfriend being beaten to a pulp, she screamed for help and watched in disbelief, not aware of what lay ahead.
“When he fell down they searched him and took his money and cellphone. Then they came for me. They searched me, took my cellphone and money and walked off.”
Relieved that they had left her, Angela tried to help her unconscious boyfriend, but soon realised that the two thugs were gunning for her again. “They dragged me to the next street. One of the guys pushed me up against the wall of a house and started raping me.
“The other one kept telling me to keep quiet and not to scream and kept a lookout for people.”
When the man had finished raping her, he and his accomplice left without a word and made off into the night.
“I have no idea why they came back and raped me. I don’t know. I ran back to the street where they left my boyfriend, but he was gone.”
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi confirmed the incident and said that in the earlier cases, the alleged serial rapist had operated alone but in recent cases he had involved other men, but only he raped the women.
The suspect was arrested in August at his house, but escaped from police custody.
“At this stage, more than nine cases have been opened against the the suspect,” Nkoadi said.
