Cape Town - A 24-year-old man was rearrested in Scottsdene, Cape Town, after a police captain allegedly helped him escape custody last weekend, Western Cape police said on Friday.

“The suspect was arrested about [10am] on Friday... at his place of residence in Carmen Street, Scottsdene,” police spokesman FC van Wyk said.

The man was originally arrested last week on Saturday for alleged possession of an unlicenced firearm. While officers were arresting him a fellow officer apparently interfered.

“While they were busy, a police female captain from Table View SAPS arrived with her private vehicle accompanied by an unknown male in civilian clothes. She was dressed in full police uniform,” Van Wyk said.

She demanded the suspect's release.

“When the members refused she then pulled the suspect free from them and she instructed the suspect to run away.”

The police captain has since been arrested for defeating the ends of justice, obstructing officers from performing their duties, and assisting a suspect to escape arrest.
