An armoured police vehicle was petrol bombed during a service delivery protest in Oukasi near Brits, North West police said on Tuesday.

Captain Aafje Botma said the vehicle, known as a Nyala, came under attack on Monday night.

It entered Oukasi to help control rioting when residents barricaded streets with rocks and burning tyres. They were demanding water and electricity.

Protesters threw a petrol bomb at the Nyala and it exploded, causing damage to the inside of the vehicle. Police were not injured, Botma said.

She could not confirm reports that a shop was looted and burnt on Monday night.

“I have not received (a) report on a shop set alight, I do not know about it,” she said.

Madibeng municipal spokesman Patrick Morathi said a meeting between the municipality and residents to discuss their concerns would be held later on Tuesday.

“We do not know what are they protesting about,” he said.

He said the municipality would only comment in detail after the meeting. – Sapa
