Cape Town - A police officer is recovering in hospital after he was shot as he and colleague tried to arrest three suspects fleeing the scene at the Silver Creek Spur in Durbanville on Monday morning.
Two of the suspects, who had pretended to be Spur suppliers to gain access to the restaurant, were arrested.
Warrant Officer Frederick Williams and his colleague gave chase after responding to the call from the Spur, which is about 160 metres from the police station.
Silver Creek Spur general manager Arthur Peace said: "(The robbers) came in through the back door with our suppliers. Once they were in they cornered our manager and searched for the safe. When they didn't find the money they got agitated and robbed her instead."
Peace said no patrons were harmed.
It is believed the suspects fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum minibus towards Durban road, Durbanville, before they were apprehended.
Police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the robbery took place at around 11.10am in Pampoen Kraal Road, Durbanville.
"Police pulled over the vehicle and shooting ensued. A police officer was shot and wounded. Cases of business robbery and attempted murder are under investigation. Two suspects in their thirties were arrested and two firearms were confiscated," Rwexana said.
She said Williams was shot in the head. He was rushed to hospital for observation.
