Pretoria - Police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old Centurion girl in a shooting, and also the possible contravention of the Firearms Control Act after the girl shot herself in front of her brother in a park.

Catelin De Wit had apparently visited the park near her home in Amberfield Glen with her younger brother. She allegedly shot her brother, who did not sustain any injuries, before turning the gun on herself.

Police provincial spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said two shots were fired in the park. “We cannot say if the girl wanted to shoot her brother or wanted to scare him away,” he said.

Mofokeng said an inquest docket and a case of negligence in the handling of a firearm had been opened.
