Johannesburg - The police are investigating an alleged rape that took place at the Lusito Land festival on Saturday afternoon.

The 19-year-old victim, according to members of her family, was raped near the toilets at the festival, in close proximity to crowds of festival-goers.

She apparently visited the festival with her family and friends in the early afternoon and later went missing.

Attempts were made to find her, but her family said the Lusito Land personnel had been unwilling to assist.

Lusito Land is an annual Portuguese-themed festival held in La Rochelle. It opened last Thursday.

She was later found by paramedics, her family said, and taken to a local hospital.

The organisers of Lusito Land, however, said the alleged sexual assault had happened outside the festival grounds in an adjacent car park.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said on Sunday night that a rape charge had been laid at the Randburg police station.
