Johannesburg – Political parties have conveyed their condolences to the family and friends of former Generations actor Mandla Hlatshwayo following the shocking news of his death.

It was earlier reported that Hlatshwayo was shot dead on Sunday night during an attempted robbery in Soweto.

Hlatshwayo was known for his role on Generations, playing Siphiwe Phosa as well being a DJ on Jozi FM.

Police spokesperson Captain Nomvula Mbense confirmed the death, saying four armed men stormed a pub in Pimville between 10pm and 11pm and tried to rob everyone inside.

“Two victims were shot during the robbery and died on the scene. At this stage it’s not clear what was stolen from the scene."

“A manhunt is underway for the four men and a case of premeditated murder and armed robbery has been opened – investigations are continuing,” she said.

The National Freedom Party and the Pan Africanist Congress paid tribute to the Jozi FM DJ.

NFP spokesperson Sabelo Sigudu hailed Hlatshwayo for the bravery displayed in his final moments.

“Noting the confirmed report, saying or stating that Mandla was trying to help a women being mugged, we take this time to salute Mandla, [who] died a hero, trying to defend a woman."

“[His death] clearly shows that our communities are no longer safe anymore especially women in South Africa.”

Sigudi urged police to speed up their investigation into Hlatshwayo’s death and to bring the suspects to book.

He also took a swipe at Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, saying the minister ought to spend less time on Twitter and rather focus his energy on addressing the national crisis that is crime.

“It can't be correct that in such a rough country we live in, the minister of police is always found making jokes on social media while criminals are doing as they please in this country," Sigudi said.

The PAC meanwhile, hailed Hlatshwayo as a gifted musician and actor.

The party praised the DJ for the role he played in lifting people’s spirits and thanked his family for “borrowing SA your talented and gifted son, brother, father and uncle”.

“Hlatshwayo will always be remembered in the entertainment industry by the next generations to come.”
