Johannesburg - An electricity tower has collapsed in Soweto, leading Eskom to implement rotational power cuts in some areas, the power producer said.

“On (Sunday), an Eskom tower collapsed in Slovoville, Soweto, due to the theft of structural components of the tower,” spokeswoman Reneiloe Semenya said in a statement.

“The collapsed tower also caused damage to the adjacent tower.”

A technical team was working to fix the damage, but this could take “an extended time”.

Semenya said supply had been restored to all customers.

However, in order to manage power demand in affected areas, Eskom would implement rotational power cuts for three hours at a time in Meadowlands, Snake Park, Dobsonville Gardens, Bramfischerville and Protea Glen.

The power cuts would last until the damaged towers were repaired.
