Polokwane - A 24-year-old Polokwane man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing to death his pregnant girlfriend and her mother, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

Colonel Ronel Otto said the man had apparently argued with his 20-year-old girlfriend, who was seven months pregnant, before stabbing her and her mother, aged 58, to death at their home in the Mkwazini village at Letsitele on Thursday night.

Both women died on the scene.

“The... (girlfriend) was taken to hospital in an attempt to save the baby, but it was too late.”

After fleeing the scene, the man went to a friend's house nearby and allegedly set it alight - apparently motivated by a dispute over money.

No one was hurt but the house was completely destroyed.

Otto said the man, aged 24, was arrested on the same night as the murders, after police and the community worked together to track him.

The man had also been linked to previous housebreaking incidents in the area and police were continuing to investigate his possible connection with other crimes.

The man is due in the Ritavi Magistrates' Court on Monday where he will face charges of murder and arson. - Sapa
