Butterworth - A 51-year-old school principal in Ngqamakhwe, near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, appeared in the local magistrate’s court on Monday in connection with the alleged rape of one of his pupils.

The principal, who cannot be named until he pleads, was arrested on July 27 after the 13-year-old girl’s family reported the matter to the police.

“His case was postponed to Wednesday 10 August 2016 for further evidence on bail proceedings. The accused remained in custody as he was not granted bail,” said police spokesman Jackson Manatha.

“It is alleged that the suspect started to rape the victim from March till July 2016. The victim was noticed by her family members that her behaviour has changed. When she was asked what happened, she broke the silence that she had been raped by the suspect…”
