Free State - A Mangaung prison doctor being held hostage by two inmates was freed around 7am on Tuesday morning, Free State police said.

A police task force team entered the room and freed the doctor, unharmed, from the two inmates, spokesman Brigadier Billy Jones said.

The two men were arrested. They took the doctor hostage while they were undergoing their weekly medical check-up at 11am on Monday. They forced their way into the medical room and held the doctor and a nurse hostage.

They later released the nurse. The two allegedly assaulted her. She sustained bruises and minor injuries.

The men had been changing their demands throughout Monday night. The prisoners reportedly wanted a transfer to a prison in Gauteng. - Sapa
