A man awaiting trial for rape has escaped from the Bityi Periodical Court near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, police said on Friday.
He was about to be called into the courtroom around 9am on Thursday when police realised he had vanished, Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.
“The escape was mysterious because it happened shortly after the 20-year-old had been brought to the court from Bityi police station,” he said.
The escapee was arrested on Wednesday in Bityi, but full details of his rape case were not immediately available.
Fatyela said a docket of defeating the ends of justice had been opened to probe the escape internally. - Sapa
