Recent criminal acts against two advocates in Gauteng should be investigated, the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) said on Thursday.
It came out in support of a call by General Council of the Bar chairman Gerrit Pretorius that the relevant authorities should act to probe the complaints made by the two advocates.
This was vital in order to prevent others from further threatening these advocates or others, said the LRC in a statement.
In April, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) advocate Glynnis Breytenbach had her car shot at while driving, and someone tried to cut her off the road.
Breytenbach was suspended earlier in May with the NPA saying this related to her conduct in handling one of the cases allocated to her. She is the head of the NPA in Gauteng's specialised commercial crime unit.
They would not be drawn on which one it was, and have rejected speculation that it was related to dropped fraud, and murder charges against former SA Police Service crime intelligence unit head Lieutenant-General Richard Mdluli.
On Wednesday, it was reported that an affidavit requesting a probe into Mdluli's alleged abuse of state resources was one of the documents stolen from advocate Muzi Sikhakhane's Northcliff home in an April break-in.
The affidavit, written by Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, was intended for Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
In it Madonsela was asked to investigate an alleged plot by African National Congress leaders to unseat President Jacob Zuma.
“Mdluli occupies a very sensitive position in society and within the state,” Sexwale reportedly stated in the affidavit.
Expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema was also a client of Sikhakhane's.
A Range Rover and Golf stolen from Sikhakhane were found in Mamelodi.
The Law Society of SA has also called for action to find the perpetrators.
An update on whether anybody has been apprehended was not immediately available from the police or their specialised crime unit, the Hawks. - Sapa
