Durban - An alleged drunk Durban councillor who crashed into the property of a 52-year-old woman in uMlazi two weeks ago is to be probed by eThekwini Municipality’s speaker, Logie Naidoo.

The councillor has not been named because he has not been formally charged. He crashed a white VW Polo into complainant Zandile Zulu’s home in uMlazi G-section on August 28.

Zulu had alleged that two policemen who were dispatched to the scene refused to investigate claims that the councillor was drunk, did not check for his driver’s licence and urged her to negotiate privately with the councillor to settle the matter.

“I told them to do their job and pointed out to them that he was drunk. I refused for his friends to remove the car before the police arrived because I wanted them to see it, but then these policemen didn’t even ask to see his driver’s licence,” she said.

The councillor was apparently alone when he allegedly lost control and crashed into Zulu’s house.

A policeman - who has since died - crashed into the same house five years ago.

Zulu said she was angered by the councillor’s friends who she alleged drank cider in front of the policemen and taunted her that “(President Jacob) Zuma will pay for the house” - suggesting that the councillor would not pay for the damage.

The councillor could not be reached on his cellphone on Monday.

Naidoo said last night that he had received a letter from DA caucus leader Zwakele Mncwango for the council to act against the councillor.

“We are in the process of obtaining the police reports. As councillors we must know that no one is above the law,” he said.

“If councillors break the law, the law must take its course.”

Zulu, who lives with two older siblings and two children, said she would not rest until the matter had been resolved.
