Pretoria - Tshwane Metro Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident involving two officers who allegedly used Eskom’s branding on their official vehicle while performing a stop-and-search operation.

A motorist complained to the department after he was pulled over by officers in civilian clothes and had his vehicle searched on Monday.

The department’s Console Tleane said the officers were carrying out their duties within the parameters of the law.

Tleane said he contacted the member of the public and urged him to file a complaint. “The department received information that two officers stopped a member of the public and searched his person and his vehicle on a public road.

“This they did in terms of the powers bestowed on them by the SAPS Act and Criminal Procedure Act. The said member of the public was allowed to proceed with his work,” Tleane said.

However, he said the department would investigate if the two officers conducted themselves in an official manner. “Secondly, we will establish the truth about whether they did use an Eskom logo,” Tleane said.

Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe confirmed that the department had contacted the parastatal to inform it about the incident. He said they were working with the department to investigate the matter.

“We are investigating how they got hold of the stickers to begin with, because those are only for contractors, and it is baffling because the metro department has its own branding,” Phasiwe said.
