Johannesburg - A public prosecutor was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly withdrew a court case in exchange for cash, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

He allegedly withdrew drunk-driving charges against a man before he could appear in court, spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said in a statement.

The suspect had been arrested for alleged drunk driving on Monday. Tests showed he was over the legal blood alcohol limit. He was charged and released on R3 000 bail.

On Tuesday, the prosecutor stamped and signed the suspect's bail slip, instructed him to collect his bail refund and pay him R1 000 to make the case disappear. The man called the police and a trap was set for the prosecutor at the Estcourt Magistrate's Court.

The 29-year-old was arrested after he collected the R1 000.

He was expected to appear in the same court on Wednesday on corruption charges. - Sapa
