Durban - Student protests disrupted academic activities at two campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

Four students were arrested and lectures at the university's Edgewood Campus were disrupted, university spokesman Lesiba Seshoko said in a statement.

A group of about 200 students protested at the Edgewood campus while a small group hindered access to the university's Westville campus.

“Students are reminded that the university obtained a high court interdict and restraining order last week protecting the university against unlawful protests, disruptive gatherings, demonstrations, mass action, intimidation or any violent act to persons or property at the entrance and premises of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's campuses,” Seshoko said.

The university was not aware of the reason for the protests as there had been no communication from students with university management.

Lectures would resume on Tuesday and police were monitoring the situation. Comment could not immediately be obtained from the student representative council.
