Johannesburg - A 20-year-old school pupil died when a bakkie driven by an underage unlicensed driver overturned near Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said a 17-year-old pupil was transporting 26 pupils to a school tournament in his father's bakkie on Wednesday when the vehicle overturned.

“It is not clear... what led to the accident as the bakkie did not collide with another vehicle.”

The 20-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene and the other 25 pupils, including the driver, were seriously injured.

“A case of culpable homicide and driving without licence has been opened against the 17-year-old boy,” Manatha said.

The boy's father would be charged WITH allowing his son to drive his bakkie without a licence.
