Johannesburg - Pupils at Kgothalang Secondary School in Bekkersdal watched in horror on Monday as a Grade 11 boy was stabbed to death during break time.

The 17-year-old pupil was stabbed in the chest, shoulder and abdomen and died on the scene.

His alleged killer, a Grade 10 pupil, jumped over the school fence and fled.

Pupils and teachers rushed to the stab victim, who was on the second floor of a double-storey building.

According to a pupil, the alleged murderer had walked with the deceased towards the smoking corner before overpowering him.

“They walked together as if nothing was wrong. He was hugging him before taking out his knife and stabbing him. (During the) scuffle, the dead boy also tried to reach out for his knife, but it fell on the ground,” the pupil added.

Provincial police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said the suspect would face a murder charge.

The Grade 10 pupil was still on the run on Monday night.
