Pretoria - The 14-year-old girl who shot and killed herself in Amberfield Glen was on Monday described by her principal as friendly and with an infectious personality
Catelin de Witt shot herself on Friday afternoon shortly after returning home from school.
The Grade 8 pupil from Hoërskool Eldoraigne apparently showed no signs of being troubled.
“There was no indication that something was wrong. We were all shocked when we learned about the shooting,” said Frank Roos, Hoërskool Eldoraigne’s principal.
He said there was an air of melancholy around the school but 12 counsellors had been brought in to help pupils and staff deal with the tragedy.
Speaking to Pretoria News, the girl’s emotional mother, Gisela de Witt, said over the phone that she was not ready to talk to the media as she was still grieving. “There are a lot of things that I want to clarify about her passing on because there are some things that are in the media that are not true,” she said.
Police are investigating the girl’s death and also the possible contravention of the Firearms Control Act after the girl shot herself in front of her 11-year-old brother in a park. She used her father’s firearm.
Police spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said two shots were fired, but the teenager fired only one shot to her head.
