Cape Town - A man was arrested after admitting to having fabricated the theft of his firearm in order to pay off a debt, said Western Cape police on Tuesday.
“Delft police arrested a 38-year-old suspect for perjury, after he reported a false case in which he alleged that his firearm was stolen,” said provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.
Van Wyk said after the man reported the false case, police followed up, interviewed his neighbours and searched his house. Once there, they found that there were no signs of forced entry.
“During interrogation of the suspect and when confronted with this evidence, he [the suspect] acknowledged that he lied to the police and that the report of the housebreaking was false,” said van Wyk.
The suspect then admitted to police that he had given the firearm to someone he owed money.
The suspect was then arrested for perjury and appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The suspect’s ability and fitness to possess a firearm would also be determined.
