Welkom - A Free State police constable accused of raping a woman he arrested was released on R1500 bail on Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said.

The Welkom District Court postponed the case against the 38-year-old to March 27, to allow for further investigations, spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

A 42-year-old woman went to visit her sister at her home in the Thabong area on Saturday. The argued and a fight ensued. During the fight, the visiting sister was assaulted and chased out of the yard. Her sister laid a charge against her.

Dlamini said the accused and his colleagues were called to the scene and found the woman at her home. She was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police van.

“After driving around with her, the vehicle stopped in an open field and the victim was ordered to get out.”

The officer allegedly raped the woman. He was arrested on Tuesday. - Sapa
