Johannesburg - More than R800 000 worth of perlemoen has been seized at the Ultra City on the M1 in Midrand, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Bloemfontein police alerted the Gauteng flying squad that a minibus had failed to pay for petrol at a filling station in the city, and asked them to watch for the vehicle, Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

The vehicle was found and when police approached it, two people fled and one man was arrested.

Perlemoen, also known as abalone, was recovered from the vehicle.

The 30-year-old man would appear in court soon to face a charge of possession of perlemoen, which is a protected species of marine mollusc and is considered a delicacy. - Sapa
