Durban - One of late Minority Front leader Amichand Rajbansi’s grandsons is in court on a fraud charge.

Businessman Avineshsing Rajbansi, 24, was whisked in and out of the Durban Regional Court in a low key appearance on Thursday. He has been charged with tendering a fraudulent document.

According to the charge sheet, Rajbansi is alleged to have provided a bank guaranteed letter which he claimed was authentic to a Deresh Maharaj. This was to induce Maharaj to invest his capital with the businessman.

The State alleged that the bank guaranteed letter was fraudulent. The incident is alleged to have taken place in Florida Road on November 17.

Rajbansi, who is the son of the late politician’s daughter, Vimlesh, stood in the dock dressed in a blue shirt and unkempt beard while his mother looked on.

The State did not oppose bail.

In his address to the magistrate, Rajbansi’s attorney, Ridewaan Sayed, told the court he was a financial adviser who ran his business from the home he rented. He said Rajbansi earned an annual income of about R1 million and had no previous convictions.

Sayed said his client had not been evasive because he had been in discussions with police since January regarding the charge.

Rajbansi was granted R5 000 bail.
