Brits - A 32-year-old man accused of multiple rapes who escaped from police custody in Brits has been re-arrested, North West police said on Monday.
Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the man was arrested on Friday after he escaped on September 17.
He was found hiding in bushes in Zone six in Letlhabile near Brits.
“Information has it that the suspect was frequently visiting a shack in Zone 10 for food and refreshing,” said Ngubane.
He escaped when he was being transported from court to police cells after his appearance.
He is believed to have kicked open the back door of the police vehicle at traffic lights in Letlhabile.
Police tried catch him but he managed to escape.
He was initially arrested on August 13, on 13 charges of rape committed in the areas of Letlhabile, Limpopo, and Lethabong near Brits between 2009 and 2012.
“The alleged victims were between 14 and 17 years. Some of the victims were raped and robbed of their belongings when they were on their way to school.”
He was expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court again on Monday on charges of escaping from lawful custody.
North West premier Thandi Modise applauded the partnership between the police and residents that led to his arrest.
It had brought much relief, she said. - Sapa
