Durban - A truck driver convicted of raping and assaulting a six-year-old girl was jailed for life by the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

“He was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, ten years for assault and three years for abduction,” said Captain Thulani Zwane.

Arumugan Moonsamy Naidoo, 38, pleaded guilty to abduction, rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

According to Naidoo's plea explanation he picked up the girl, drove off, and parked in Bayhead Road, Durban. He took her into the back seat and raped her. He slapped her, tied her hands, arms and legs, hit her on the head with a brick, threw her into bushes on the roadside, and drove off.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the sentence would send a clear message to those who preyed on defenceless children.
