Johannesburg - The High Court in Johannesburg has banned residents of Cosmo City in Johannesburg from interrupting the construction of a high school, the education department said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Charles Phahlane said the court ordered the residents of Cosmo City Extension Seven, on Wednesday to stop “perpetrating any acts which are violent and disruptive in nature” against the construction of the Zandspruit Secondary School.

“We are pleased that the court has granted this order as the group has been threatening the safety of the school,” said Phahlane.

He said the court also approved the use of alternative building materials if they were of an acceptable quality.

The court also barred residents from blockading streets in the area.

Phahlane said it was unacceptable for residents to disrupt the provision of education which the department was trying hard to provide.

“The north of Johannesburg is a pressure point in terms of need for space in schools, and schools in Cosmo City in particular are becoming increasingly overcrowded.”

Cosmo City residents were given until April 23 to make representations about why the order should not be made permanent. - Sapa
