Bloemfontein - Retired Supreme Court of Appeal judge Joos Hefer was attacked by two robbers in his Bloemfontein home, Die Volksblad newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Hefer, 82, was hit on the mouth by one of the robbers who threatened him with a knife at his home in Waverley. At the time he had been waiting for a former colleague to pick him up, on Saturday around 11am.

The robbers tied Hefer up and left him in the bathroom. He managed to free himself after about two hours.

Hefer's son Seef Hefer told the newspaper his father had boxed for Free State and he managed to give one of the robbers a hefty punch.

“His hand is still swollen. He is very proud of that blow,” Seef Hefer was quoted as saying.

He said except for a swollen hand and a bruised lip the judge was doing well. Cash, televisions, and the judge's new bakkie were stolen.

Police confirmed the robbery. No arrests had been made yet.
