Polokwane - A rhino carcass was found in the Mapungubwe National Park in northern Limpopo, SA National Parks said on Thursday.

The rhino bull carcass was found with its horns removed at the World Heritage Site on Wednesday, SANParks spokesman Reynold Thakhuli said.

Thakhuli said this was the first poaching case reported in the park.

“We are distressed at the loss of this rhino and are working tirelessly around the clock to bring the perpetrators to book.”

On Wednesday, a poacher was sentenced to 77 years in jail by the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court for hunting three rhino in the Kruger National Park in 2011.

“We will continue to fight the battle against rhino poaching and are encouraged by the number of arrests made and the steep sentences for convicted criminals such as the 77 years given to a rhino poacher,” Thakhuli said.

Police and SANParks would investigate the Mapungubwe poaching case.
